Lyon Confluence

Lyon’s centre doubles in size

The Confluence project aims to double the surface area of Lyon city centre, by building in the south of the Presqu’île peninsula. The site’s size, heritage and history make it ideal for city-centre functions, such as housing, retail, culture and leisure, headquarters for major companies and institutions. In 2010, this territory, surrounded by rivers and wooded hills, will be home to a new, lively, high-density district centred on two squares: Place Nautique and Place des Archives. Almost 1,000 new homes will be built and 5,000 jobs created. This will be the biggest change in Lyon’s history.

Phase 1 (2003–2015)

Phase 1 represents almost 40% of the total planned construction, or 380,000 sqm (net floor space).

It will involve completion of a significant part of the scheduled housing, office space, retail space, open spaces and public amenities.

Autumn 2007: public relations agencies DDB Nouveau Monde and Communiquez move into the former Customs building, specially converted into an arts and communication space
December 2007: newspaper group Le Progrès move into their new head office; the first office building on Place des Archives is completed.

Companies that have chosen the Confluence:

Elyo (energy and environment), Babylone Avenue (architecture firm), the Eiffage group (construction) and Rhône-Alpes Regional Council: a 44,000 sqm building due to be completed in late 2009

By 2010

Completion of the Confluence’s main square, Place Nautique
Inauguration of a leisure and retail park, complete with a 3-star hotel and UGC multiplex cinema: completion due early 2010
Delivery of a mixed housing and office development totalling 150,000 sqm
Mixed HEQ construction (620 homes, 15,000 sqm of offices, 4,000 sqm for retail and local amenities at ground level): completion staggered between the last quarter of 2009 and the first quarter of 2010.
Musée des Confluences (Confluence Museum), designed by architects Coop Himmelb(l)au for Rhône Departmental Council, due to open in late 2009
